(60 seconds) Women living
in sub-Saharan Africa are 175 times more likely to die in pregnancy
or childbirth than women living in developed regions of the world.
For every woman who dies, 20 or more are injured or disabled. The
United Nations has set a Millennium Development Goal of a
three-quarters reduction in maternal deaths by the year 2015. The
Population Council is helping to meet this goal by designing and
assessing cost-effective programs to make pregnancy safer.
By rigorously evaluating promising
safe motherhood interventions under real-life conditions in Ghana
and Pakistan, we have shown that it is possible to significantly
reduce maternal deaths in poor areas of the developing world. Now we
are working to expand these programs in these countries and others.
