| In
South Africa there are three HIV-infected 15–24-year-old females for
every infected male of the same age. The Population Council is testing
Carraguard®, a potential microbicidal gel, in South Africa.
Microbicides, products being developed to prevent HIV infection when
applied prior to sex, will expand HIV prevention options for women. |

| Last year,
640,000 children were newly infected with HIV,
most of them at birth or while breastfeeding. The Population Council works to identify cost-effective ways of providing services to
prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. |
