Evaluation of mothers2mothers in
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Symposium sponsored by the Horizons program
11 May 2007, 8:30–11:00 am

Location
Washington, DC

In honor of Mother’s Day, the Horizons program  sponsored a symposium to discuss findings from its evaluation of mothers2mothers, an education and mentoring program for HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers in South Africa.

mothers2mothers aims to enhance public-sector prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services by empowering HIV-positive women to provide psychosocial support to newly diagnosed HIV-positive women through one-on-one and group sessions in antenatal care and maternal and child health clinical settings.

While there has been much interest in this innovative program, this evaluation is the first to assess its effectiveness. The study examined whether participation in mothers2mothers affected women’s uptake of key PMTCT services and outcomes.
