Preventing Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission Comprehensive services for the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) are feasible and effective in resource-poor settings, yet implementation challenges remain, according to recent research by the Horizons Program.

Acrux and Council Sign Joint Development Agreement for Women’s Health Products
The Population Council, an international public health organization and FemPharm Pty Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Acrux Limited, have signed a joint development agreement to test transdermal spray delivery of contraceptive formulations of Nestorone®. (2 December)

The Population Council Sells NDA Rights to Intrauterine Copper Contraceptive
The Population Council announced today that it sold the New Drug Application (NDA) for ParaGard®, the Copper T 380A intrauterine copper contraceptive (ICC), to FEI for an undisclosed sum. (19 November)

Population Council Wins Global Media Award for Excellence in Population Reporting
The Council's Studies in Family Planning has been named "Best Population Journal" by the 2003 Global Media Awards for Excellence in Population Reporting. (13 November)

Council’s AIDS Prevention Product Development Gets Boost from New Agreement
The Population Council announced an agreement that effectively launches work on the Council’s next-generation microbicide. (26 September)

Adolescents Are the Focus of World Population Day 2003 and Council Study on Pakistani Youth
Coinciding with World Population Day 2003, which is dedicated to adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights, the Council released findings from the first comprehensive survey of Pakistani youth. (11 July)

Council President Visits Africa To View Council's Research and Meet African Officials Linda G. Martin, Council president; Rodney B. Wagner, chairman of the Board of Trustees; and Peter Donaldson, vice president and director of the International Programs Division, met with officials and health workers in Ghana, South Africa, and Kenya. (9 July)

Population Council's Board of Trustees Elects Two Members.
Prominent attorney Mark A. Walker and finance expert Robert B. Millard were elected to the Council's board of trustees. (1 July)

The Encyclopedia of Population is the first comprehensive appraisal of the field of population studies for many decades. (4 June) 
The Population Council's Mark Montgomery and Colleagues Edit Cities Transformed, on Urban Growth in Developing Countries 
Over the next 25 years most of the world's population growth will take place in the cities of developing countries. (27 May) 

Population Council Staff and Collaborators to Share Findings 
Council scientists and colleagues will present findings from research conducted on topics including gender roles, HIV/AIDS, and other projects from Bolivia to Zimbabwe in Washington, DC. (23 May)

New Staff Members to Manage Clinical Trials for the Council's HIV/AIDS Prevention Product
Pekka Lähteenmäki, a physician with a Ph.D. in reproductive physiology, will oversee microbicide effectiveness testing. Stephanie Skoler has responsibility for implementation of the clinical trial. (23 April)
  
Peter Donaldson to Direct Population Council's Largest Division
Peter Donaldson joins the Council as vice president and director of its International Programs Division. Donaldson was formerly chief executive officer of the Washington, DC-based Population Reference Bureau. (21 April)
  
Council's Paul Demeny Wins Award for Excellence in Writing and Editing in Population Sciences
Paul Demeny is the winner of the 2003 Olivia Schieffelin Nordberg Award. Demeny is the founder and editor of the Council's journal Population and Development Review.

Council Publishes Life Span: Evolutionary, Ecological, and Demographic Perspectives
Editors James R. Carey and Shripad Tuljapurkar explore the subject of the life span, both human and animal, by bringing together research conducted by scholars from many disciplines. (17 April)

Reproductive scientist Marc Bygdeman, international finance and debt expert Angel Gurria, and editor and foreign affairs journalist Werner Holzer are the latest additions to the Council's board of trustees. (29 January)
 
USAID Programs Assist the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund
The Population Council, its research partners, and the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund will be working together to improve the health, safety, and survival rates of South Africa's orphans and other vulnerable children.  (10 January)

Analysis Confirms that Older Americans Are Less Disabled: Good News at What Cost?
A meta-analysis of eight national surveys confirms a decline in some of the disabilities and limitations in functioning that commonly plague older Americans.

In Developed Countries, an End to Childbearing Delays Could Lead to Fertility Rise
John Bongaarts concludes that many developed countries could experience a modest rise in fertility. But it seems unlikely that fertility will climb back to the replacement level of 2.1 births per woman. (8 January)
