Massive Increase in Services Needed for Pregnant Women to Stop Virus Being Passed to Children
On World AIDS Day, UNICEF and WHO convened the High-level Partners Forum to push for far greater access to preventive services for pregnant women living with HIV in the worst-affected countries. (30 November)

The Council Is Co-hosting Innovative Multisectoral Strategies for Meeting the Needs of Indigenous Girls and Other Vulnerable Adolescents in Guatemala, 1–2 December
This meeting will focus on multisectoral problem-solving, that is, efforts that incorporate methods to improve formal and informal education, livelihood opportunities, health awareness and services, intercultural relations, life skills, and gender empowerment. (29 November) (en español)

The Council welcomes the newest members to its board of trustees: financier Darcy Bradbury and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen. (7 September)

by Pakistani government for national service. (14 August)

Population Council Recognizes World Population Day 2005
The Council supports the theme of this year’s World Population Day, Equality Empowers, every day with dozens of projects dedicated to improving the status and health of young women and girls. (11 July)

Council Journal Publishes New Analysis of American Smokers and Mortality
In the June 2005 issue of Population and Development Review journal, Richard Rogers and his colleagues provide a more nuanced picture of the impact of smoking than had previously been  available. (7 July)

U.N. Millennium Development Goals: Council Publishes New Perspectives from Experienced Practitioners
The Council's Studies in Family Planning published five  pointed, critical essays of efforts to achieve the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals to reduce poverty and improve the lives of the world's people by 2015. (27 June)

Council Researchers Announced Positive Results from the First Clinical Study of a Novel Contraceptive Spray for Women
The once-a-day spray provided sustained delivery of contraception in Phase I clinical trials. The test product was well tolerated by participants and no serious adverse events recorded. (20 June)

Jotham Musinguzi, a Ugandan Obstetrician/Gynecologist and Government Leader Is Elected to the Council's Board of Trustees
The Population Council's newest board member, is the director of the Population Secretariat of the Ugandan Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning. (17 June)

Population Council President Is in Ghana
Peter Donaldson is in Ghana to strengthen ties with community leaders, colleague organizations, donors, and government officials. (9 June)

Felicia H. Stewart Wins the 2005 Olivia Schieffelin Nordberg Award
The honor, presented for excellence in writing and editing in the population sciences, will be presented at the Council in June. (12 May)

Levonorgestrel-only Emergency Contraceptive Pills (Plan B®) Appear to Work by Interfering with Ovulation, Not Implantation
Recent research by members of the Council’s International Committee for Contraception Research and other scientists shows that emergency contraceptive pills appear to work by interfering with ovulation. They do not appear to disrupt postfertilization events, such as the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus. (2 May)

Sheldon J. Segal Is Awarded International Academy of Human Reproduction's Lifetime Achievement Award
Segal, who holds the title of Distinguished Scientist at the Council, is a biomedical scientist. The academy was acknowledging his efforts to improve reproductive health for women and men around the world. (7 April)

Council’s Matthew Hardy Chairs North American Testis Workshop
The North American Testis Workshop, chaired by the Council's Matthew Hardy, will be held in Seattle, Washington. Participants will discuss findings from testicular cell dynamics and endocrine signaling studies. (28 March)

Board Chairman Rodney B. Wagner Dies
The Population Council mourns the loss of Rodney B. Wagner, a member of the Population Council’s board of trustees since 1996 and its chairman since 2001. (28 March)

Ragui Assaad Joins Council as New Regional Director for Middle East
Assaad, whose recent research focuses on labor market analysis, gender inequity in the labor market, and work and family issues in the Middle East and North Africa, will oversee the Council's Middle Eastern programs and studies. (8 March)

Aging, Health, and Public Policy, a new Council publication, offers a multidisciplinary perspective on the social and economic impact of population aging on Americans. (28 February)

Encyclopedia of Population, Edited by Demeny and McNicoll, Earns Kudos
Edited by Council social scientists Paul Demeny and Geoffrey McNicoll, the encyclopedia was named an "Outstanding Academic Title for 2004" by Choice, a publication of the American Library Association. (31 January)

Council Co-sponsors Gender, Culture and Rights Workshop in South Africa
Council researchers Saiqa Mullick and Jane Chege presented their latest findings to scholars and practitioners at a three-day conference aimed at promoting gender rights. (28 January)

Peter J. Donaldson, Ph.D., Is Named President of the Population Council
Donaldson was praised for his "extraordinary energy and enthusiasm for the Population Council" by board of trustee chairman Rodney B. Wagner. (11 January)

Mexican President Vicente Fox to Meet with Population Council Trustees and Staff
Vicente Fox Quesada, the president of Mexico, met with senior Council management on 10 January at Los Pinos, the presidential residence. (10 January)

John J. Danilovich, U.S. Ambassador to Brazil, Visits Council-supported Project
U.S. government officials met with staff and clients of Saude na Estrada ("health on the road"), to learn about this targeted HIV prevention project for truck drivers. (January)
