Rockefeller, Mastroianni Join
Population Council
Board of Trustees
NEW YORK, NY (16 July 2008) — The Population Council announced that Justin Rockefeller, a youth-civic-engagement activist, and Anna Mastroianni, a legal scholar and bioethicist, have joined the organization’s board of trustees as of 1 July 2008. The Population Council was founded in 1952 by Rockefeller’s grandfather, John D. Rockefeller 3rd, to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world and to help achieve a humane, equitable, and sustainable balance between people and resources.
The strengths brought by the newest members of the Council’s board supplement the areas of expertise of the trustees now serving. Justin Rockefeller is co-founder of GenerationEngage, a nonpartisan youth-civic-engagement initiative that connects young Americans, particularly those who fall outside the boundaries of university campuses, to one another, to political leaders, to other civic organizations, and to meaningful conversations about the future they will inherit. Rockefeller noted, “For myriad personal, moral, and intellectual reasons, it’s an honor and a privilege to join the board of the Population Council, a high-leverage organization that produces tremendous and much-needed benefit in underprivileged communities.”
In addition to teaching law and public health at the University of Washington, Anna Mastroianni conducts research on policy gaps and conflicts in the use of stem cells, human embryos, and reproductive technologies. "The global tensions caused by increasingly limited resources along with rapid growth and development are among the most critical issues for law and bioethics in public health," said Mastroianni. "Nowhere are those tensions being so carefully studied and applied than at the Population Council, and so it is an honor for me to join this remarkable organization as a trustee."
The new trustees join 14 other men and women from seven countries, who are experts in AIDS, economics, finance, international law, journalism, obstetrics and gynecology, population, and public health.
