Population Council Names Scott Newman Chief Financial Officer

NEW YORK, NY (3 April 2008) — The Population Council has appointed Scott Newman to serve as the international nonprofit research organization’s chief financial officer. Newman will be responsible for the overall financial strategy and management of the Council’s fiscal resources including the annual budget, which was US$74.2 million in 2007.

He joins the Population Council after 14 years at the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), most recently as its vice president for finance and administration. Newman is credited with helping to bring financial stability and efficiency to amfAR, overseeing the expansion of the budget, and expanding its reserves. He previously served as controller for the nonprofit organization God’s Love We Deliver, after beginning his career in the financial sector.

He was on the board of the National Federation of Nonprofits and over the years has been involved with several key industry groups, including the Nonprofit Cyber-Accountability Forum, the CFO Affinity Group of the National Health Council, Gotham City Networking, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Nonprofit Industry Conference Steering Committee and Not-for-Profit Executive Forum. He is a past recipient of the Executive of the Year Award from the New York Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants.

Newman earned a B.A. in political science from the State University of New York at Binghamton and an M.B.A. in finance from the City University of New York, Baruch College.
