Population Council Endocrinologist Régine Sitruk-Ware Recognized for Contraception Research
for Perimenopausal Women

NEW YORK, NY (17 August 2009) — Régine Sitruk-Ware, executive director of research and development for the Population Council and chairperson of the prestigious International Committee for Contraception Research, will receive the 2009 North American Menopause Society/Warner Chilcott Perimenopausal Contraception research award on 2 October in San Diego during NAMS’s annual meeting.

The award recognizes an individual whose body of research has advanced the understanding of perimenopausal contraception, which remains a relevant biomedical issue as the aging of populations ensures that more women than ever before face the transition to menopause. “I am very grateful to the North American Menopause Society and Warner Chilcott for honoring my research in the fields of contraception, perimenopausal care, and women’s reproductive health. I have devoted many years of my life to reproductive medicine, conducting research in the hope of bettering men’s and women’s lives, and I feel truly honored to see my work acknowledged as having made a difference,” said Sitruk-Ware.

A reproductive endocrinologist, Sitruk-Ware supervises research in reproductive biology, preclinical research, and clinical development of new molecules at the Population Council. She is a member of the Expert Group on Hormonal Contraception of the European Society for Contraception and is the program director and principal investigator of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Contraceptive Development Research Center. She serves as an advisor to US and international organizations such as the NIH and World Health Organization, is on the NGO Advisory Committee for World Contraception Day 2009, and is a founding member and current general secretary of the International Menopause Society. Sitruk-Ware was the 2008 recipient of the NAMS/Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc. Progestogen Research Award.

Before joining the Population Council, she was a professor and researcher at the University of Paris and later directed research and development in the pharmaceutical industry. Currently an adjunct professor at Rockefeller University, Sitruk-Ware has written eight books and more than 250 articles and reviews, mostly dealing with men’s and women’s health care issues.
