Population Council Research that makes a difference

Demography Textbook Fills Gap in the Arabic Academic Library

CAIRO, EGYPT (10 June 2010) — In 2010, the Population Council published Introduction to the Study of Demography and Its Applications in Arabic. Publication of this textbook fills a gap of 25 years since a similar book was published in the Arabic language.

The book provides information on the basic principles of demography for those interested in addressing population issues from different disciplines such as public health science, sociology, economics, statistics, and geography. It presents the tools necessary to measure different population phenomena that facilitate the study of population issues in the Arab region. It covers new aspects of demography that are not available in a single reference in Arabic, such as economy, population and health statistics, morbidity, and population theory.

The book's 12 chapters are divided into three sections. The first covers topics such as origins of population data, age and gender composition of the population, and tools for population analysis of data. The second section focuses on measurement of phenomena. The third covers theories of population and economy, population and public health statistics, population projections, and, finally, the demographic situation in the Arab world.

This book is a joint effort. It was prepared by a group of 12 experts in the field of population studies from Egypt and Sudan and was funded by the Packard Foundation.
