NEW YORK, NY (19 August 2010) – Venture capitalist Howard Cox was elected to the board of trustees of the Population Council, effective 1 July. Cox is an advisory partner at Greylock Partners, a national venture capital firm with which he has been associated for 38 years. Greylock invests in health care, software, and data communications.
"We couldn't be more pleased that Howard has agreed to join us in our efforts to foster the well-being of the world's most vulnerable people," said Peter J. Donaldson, president of the Population Council. "His knowledge of the governance and finances of nonprofits is profound, as is his commitment to using that knowledge to make a positive difference in the world. The Council is proud to have him on our board."
Cox brings to the Population Council his experience as a director of more than 30 companies, including various Fidelity Investments mutual funds. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a director of the Young Global Leaders. He serves on the board of fellows of Harvard Medical School and on the executive council of the Department of Health Policy and Management, Harvard School of Public Health, and the dean’s advisory group of the Harvard Business School. He has been instrumental in encouraging and supporting the HBS Healthcare Initiative, which was created to help address complex problems in the global health care industry from a multidisciplinary, business-oriented perspective.
Cox received his A.B. from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was an international fellow. He earned his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and was a 2003 recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award, the highest honor the school can give to an alumnus. Before joining Greylock, he served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He also served as a captain in the US Army.
The new trustee joins 14 other men and women from six countries who are experts in AIDS, economics, finance, law, journalism, reproductive health, population, and public health.
