Bangladesh Country Director Ubaidur Rob Presents Findings of Innovative Project in Bangladesh

Demand-based Reproductive Health Commodity Project improves the quality of reproductive health services in Bangladesh

DHAKA, BANGLADESH (4 October 2010) — The National Dissemination Seminar on the Demand-based Reproductive Health Commodity Project (DBRHCP) was held 21 September 2010 in Dhaka. The seminar disseminated findings from a project designed to improve the quality of reproductive health services by making them more accessible to and appropriate for meeting the needs of poor women and children through demand-based approaches.

Dr. Ubaidur Rob, country director of the Population Council’s Bangladesh office, presented the project’s innovative, participatory, and effective service-delivery models. Rob’s discussion was primarily focused on key findings from the four major operation research areas: financial support for poor women receiving obstetric care through a voucher system; strengthening HFWCs (health and family welfare centers) to improve the quality of family planning and reproductive health services; community participation to enhance the quality of maternal health services; and human resource skill development. The session concluded with open discussions and lively interaction on the issues.

The DBRHCP project was funded by CIDA through UNFPA in Bangladesh. The project was implemented by NIPORT in collaboration with four other agencies. The Population Council’s Bangladesh office conducted operations research for this effort. The seminar was one way to recognize the Council’s innovative work with the government and our partner organizations to improve maternal health services in Bangladesh.
