Population Council Demographer John Bongaarts Elected to National Academy of Sciences

NEW YORK (6 May 2002) — John Bongaarts, vice president of the Population Council's Policy Research Division, was among the 72 new members recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

The election was held on April 30 during the business section of the 139th annual meeting of the Academy. Election to membership in the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a US scientist or engineer. Bongaarts joins an elite group of 1,907 active members.

On staff at the Population Council since 1973, Bongaarts's research focuses on a range of population issues, including the determinants of fertility, population–environment relationships, the demographic impact of the AIDS epidemic, and population policy options in the developing world.

Bongaarts recently served as chairman of the Panel on Population Projections of the National Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, a member of the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Some of the awards that he has received include the Robert J. Lapham Award and the Mindel Sheps Award from the Population Association of America and the Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health. Bongaarts has a master's degree in systems analysis from the Eindhoven Institute of Technology, Netherlands, and a Ph.D. in physiology and biomedical engineering from the University of Illinois.
