MEDIA CENTER Financier; Nobel Laureate Elected to Board of Trustees NEW YORK (7 September 2005) — Financier and former U.S. Treasury official Darcy Bradbury and Nobel Prize winner and Harvard professor Amartya Sen were elected to the Population Council’s board of trustees. “We are delighted that the Council’s mission continues to attract such distinguished individuals,” said president Peter J. Donaldson. “Bradbury’s financial management expertise and her commitment to reproductive health and Sen’s knowledge of international development and human rights will help shape the Council’s work.” Bradbury works for The Blackstone Group, a private investment and advisory firm. She also serves on the board of directors of the Women’s Campaign Fund, which is dedicated to increasing the number of progressive women leaders in America. After graduating with honors from Harvard Business School, Bradbury began her career as an investment banker specializing in infrastructure finance. She then moved into government service as New York City’s deputy comptroller for finance. During the Clinton administration Bradbury was appointed to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, first as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Federal Finance and later as the Assistant Secretary for Federal Markets. Winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economics, Sen is Lamont University Professor and Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University. His previous academic appointments include the Delhi School of Economics, Jadavpur University, the London School of Economics, Oxford University, and Trinity College. His research interests include economics and philosophy, welfare economics, social choice theory, decision theory, economic measurement, development economics, and moral and political philosophy. Sen has written and/or edited 25 books. His latest work is The Argumentative Indian: Writings on Indian History, Culture and Identity. Bradbury and Sen join 14 other academic, business, and intellectual leaders from Germany, India, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, Sweden, Uganda, and the United States. Elizabeth J.
