Peter Donaldson to Direct Population Council's Largest Division

NEW YORK (21 April 2003) — Peter Donaldson will join the Population Council as vice president and director of its International Programs Division on 12 May 2003. Donaldson comes to the Council after serving as the chief executive officer of the Washington, DC-based Population Reference Bureau for nine years. But Donaldson is not really "new" to the Population Council, as this is the third time he has served on the staff. His first postdoctoral position was in the mid-1970s, conducting research for the Council in Thailand and South Korea. Then, after working for other institutions for over a decade, Donaldson returned to the Population Council in 1989 to become its regional director for South and East Asia.

"I'm very enthusiastic about my new position," says Donaldson. "The Population Council is an important international institution. Each time I have worked at the Council, I have been impressed by the quality of the research and ability of the staff," he added. Donaldson has also served as the director of development and government relations at Family Health International and as director of the Committee on Population of the National Research Council.

In addition to his job responsibilities, Donaldson has held numerous professional service posts, including membership on the board of directors of the Population Association of America and on the council of the population section of the American Sociological Association. He is currently a member of the advisory committees of the Institute of Population and Social Research at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand.

Donaldson is the author, co-author, or editor of six books and more than 60 scientific and popular articles on population, development, Asian affairs, and other issues. His most recent publication is a 2002 article in Population Studies, "The elimination of contraceptive acceptor targets and the evolution of population policy in India." He earned a B.A. from Fordham University and a Ph.D. in sociology from Brown University. Donaldson will divide his time between the Population Council's New York and Washington, DC offices.

The Population Council is an international, nonprofit, nongovernmental research organization that seeks to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world and to help achieve a humane, equitable, and sustainable balance between people and resources.
