Fifth International Symposium on Intrauterine Devices and
Systems for Women’s Health Draws Eminent Audience
NEW YORK, NY (9 November 2006) — On 27 and 28 October 2006, more than 185
professionals—obstetrician/gynecologists; public health physicians;
biomedical researchers; academics and scientists; and representatives from
the nonprofit sector, the pharmaceutical industry, foundations, and
government donor agencies—gathered in New York City to attend the Fifth
International Symposium on Intrauterine Devices and Systems for Women’s
Health. The symposium was presented by the Population Council in cooperation
with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Over the two days, attendees heard 28 presentations by an international
group of distinguished experts on intrauterine devices and systems. The
presentations explored diverse issues including:
- Available methods of intrauterine contraception, including
copper-bearing and progestin-releasing intrauterine devices (IUDs);
- Technical issues surrounding the use of IUDs, such as insertion
postpartum or postabortion;
- Health issues related to IUDs, including the relevance of
reproductive tract infections, HIV, and contraindications for use;
- Endometrial effects of IUDs containing progestin;
- Medical benefits of IUDs containing progestin, including the
avoidance of hysterectomy in many cases; and
- Use of IUDs during peri- and postmenopause.
Presentations made at the symposium will be incorporated into a special
issue of the journal Contraception.
