MEDIA CENTER The Council’s John W. Townsend Honored for Excellence in Research by the US Agency for International Development
WASHINGTON, DC (12 December 2006) — The head of the Population Council’s Reproductive Health program, John W. Townsend, received the 2006 Marjorie Horn Operations Research Award presented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) during a ceremony in Washington, DC, on 29 November. The award is named for USAID’s former Deputy Chief of the Research, Technology, and Utilization Division, who held the post prior to her death in September 2002. It recognizes excellence in conducting and utilization of research. “Marge Horn was dedicated to ensuring that scientists listened to women, governments supported families, and communities mobilized against assaults on women’s rights,” said Townsend during his acceptance speech. “She called on all of us to think big, to work hard to ensure quality, and to make a difference in people’s lives. For most of us, these are mere aspirations. For Marge, they were a way of life.” Townsend has conducted studies on development, population, reproductive health, and women’s health. He has worked and traveled extensively in more than 35 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. He is a frequent presenter at professional meetings and has published extensively. After earning a doctorate from the University of Minnesota in social psychology, with supporting studies in public affairs and educational psychology, Townsend has worked for the Population Council for 22 years. Townsend is in charge of the strategy and priorities of the Council’ Reproductive Health program, which aims to improve sexual and reproductive health, especially among disadvantaged populations in developing countries.
