MEDIA CENTER Population Council Names New Board Members New York (29 January 2003) — Prominent reproductive scientist Marc Bygdeman, international finance and debt expert Angel Gurria, and accomplished editor and foreign affairs journalist Werner Holzer are the latest additions to the Population Council's board of trustees. "Bygdeman, Gurria, and Holzer are tremendous assets to an already stellar group," said Council President Linda Martin. "We are pleased and proud that the organization's reputation, commitment to excellence, and critical mission attract such talent from around the world." All three attended the January 14–15 board meeting held at the Council's headquarters in New York City. Marc Bygdeman is professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology at Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. He served as department chairman, medical director, as well as director of the hospital. Bygdeman was awarded a gold medal by the King of Sweden for outstanding performance in clinical work, research, and education, particularly in collaboration with the World Health Organization. Angel Gurria has had an illustrious career of public service in Mexico's government, including service as Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Gurria and former US Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker co-chaired a 2001 blue-ribbon commission, co-sponsored by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, on the role of multilateral development banks in emerging market economies. Werner Holzer, former editor-in-chief of the Frankfurter Rundschau in Frankfurt, Germany, has won numerous prestigious international awards. As a journalist specializing in the analysis of relationships between industrialized and developing countries, Holzer reported from Africa, the Middle East, the United States, and Vietnam. He previously served as a Population Council trustee from 1992 to 2001. The board, which includes 15 men and women from nine countriesEthiopia, Germany, India, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Mexico, Sweden, and the United Statesprovides leadership and guidance to the Population Council. Rodney B. Wagner, the retired vice chair of the board for J.P. Morgan Chase, and Elizabeth J. McCormack of Rockefeller Associates serve as chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the board.
