Matthew Hardy Named Co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Andrology

SEATTLE (12 September 2002) — Matthew Hardy, senior scientist at the Population Council's Center for Biomedical Research, was appointed co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Andrology. His five year term will end in June 2007. The bimonthly publication is the official journal of the American Society of Andrology, disseminating new findings in basic and clinical research relating to all aspects of the male reproductive system in humans and animals. Topics such as the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of male infertility, prostate diseases, and male sexual dysfunction, as well as male contraception are covered in the journal. The regulation of spermatogenesis and sperm maturation, as well as gene expression and regulation in all tissues of the male reproductive system are additional areas of interest. Peter Schlegel, a former postdoctoral fellow at the Council, is Hardy's co-editor and an associate professor and acting chair in the department of urology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Schlegel worked under Wayne Bardin, former vice president of the Center for Biomedical Research, and studied epididymal targets of fertility control during his fellowship.

Hardy and Schlegel were selected from an international field of competitors after submitting a proposal to the American Society of Andrology. The co-editors developed an electronic manuscript submission process, hosted and designed by the Population Council. In addition to the reputation of the individual scientists, the institution's standing in basic and clinical science activities in male reproduction contributed to the selection of the Council as the editorial office for the journal.

Hardy's studies focus on androgen secretion and male reproductive health, stress and reproduction, environmental toxicants and male fertility, as well as male contraception. Before joining the Council in 1991, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University. Hardy's research has been published in several prominent journals, including Endocrinology, Molecular Endocrinology, and Biology of Reproduction, as well as the Journal of Andrology. In July 2002 he delivered an invited talk at the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Reproduction in Baltimore, Maryland on the regulation of Leydig cell development.

The American Society of Andrology, founded in 1975, is a partnership of scientists and clinicians who promote scientific interchange and knowledge of the male reproductive system.
