In Memoriam Brilliant Scientist and Admired Colleague Matthew P. Hardy Dies NEW YORK, NY (5 November 2007) — Matthew P. Hardy, 50, died at his home on Sunday, 4 November, after completing the New York City Marathon. Hardy was a senior scientist at the Population Council, a nonprofit research organization. He is survived by his wife, Dianne, who is also a scientist in the Population Council’s Reproductive Health program. “Our hearts go out to Dianne Hardy,” said Population Council president Peter J. Donaldson. “Matt Hardy was more than a brilliant and respected scientist whose work significantly advanced the field, he was a warm, caring, wonderful person. Matt will truly be missed by friends and colleagues here and around the world.” Former co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Andrology, Hardy was a preeminent specialist in male reproductive health. He was active in scientific societies, serving on management and organizing committees for several of those groups. His significant contributions to the field were recognized by his peers worldwide. In acknowledgment of his service to the field of andrology, Hardy was to receive the American Society of Andrology’s Distinguished Service Award at the group’s 2008 annual meeting. He also served as the president and managing partner of the Testis Workshop LLC, a biennial international meeting for scientists working on male fertility and infertility. He was co-editor-in-chief of Archives of Andrology and was on the board of reviewing editors for the Biology of Reproduction. Hardy studied androgen secretion, stress and reproduction, environmental toxicants and male fertility, and male contraception. He published more than 65 papers in peer-reviewed journals and gave numerous invited talks. The grants he received from the US National Institutes of Health attest to the high quality and significance of his scientific work. He appeared last month on the CBS "Saturday Early Show," discussing recent advances in male contraception. Hardy earned an undergraduate degree from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Before joining the Council in 1991, he worked at Johns Hopkins University. He was an adjunct faculty member at Rockefeller University, the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and Sichuan University, China. An avid runner and member of the New York Road Runners club, Hardy participated in more than a dozen marathons. Donations in memory of Matthew Hardy may be made to two organizations whose work meant very much to him:
