MEDIA CENTER Population Council Promotes Patricia C. Vaughan to
NEW YORK (13 July 2006) — The Population Council's board of trustees elected general counsel Patricia C. Vaughan to the post of corporate secretary in June 2006. Since Vaughan joined the Council in November 1997, she has worked on a wide range of important legal matters affecting the Council's operations around the world. She oversees the management of the organization's legal affairs and is involved in the management of business relationships with the pharmaceutical industry. In electing Vaughan, the trustees acknowledged the need for the general counsel to serve as an officer and to report to the president. "Given Pat's accomplishments and the complexity of the legal issues facing nongovernmental organizations like the Council, this change is especially appropriate at this time," said Population Council president Peter J. Donaldson. Vaughan’s substantive areas of practice include intellectual property; licensing; contracts; employment; research integrity; and not-for-profit, international, and corporate governance. Prior to joining the Council, Vaughan was the general counsel of the Risk and Insurance Management Society, Inc. Vaughan is an adjunct lecturer at the State University of New York at Purchase; a member of the board of directors of Literacy Volunteers of Westchester County, New York; and a trustee of the South Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Maplewood, New Jersey. She received her A.B. from Princeton University in public and international affairs and her J.D. from Columbia University School of Law. She is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey. The Population Council is an international, nonprofit, nongovernmental research organization that seeks to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world and to help achieve a humane, equitable, and sustainable balance between people and resources. The Council conducts biomedical, social science, and public health research and helps build research capacities in developing countries. Established in 1952, the Council is governed by an international board of trustees. Its New York headquarters supports a global network of regional and country offices. Media contacts
