MEDIA CENTER Orphans, Abstinence, and Microbicides JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA and NEW YORK, NY (18 May 2007)—Population Council HIV and AIDS researchers will join experts from around the world at the 3rd South African AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, 5–8 June 2007. Council staff will share findings from studies aimed at understanding the individual, social, and economic circumstances that influence whether people engage in safe sex, learn their HIV status, and seek care. Recent Population Council research in South Africa includes assessments of HIV prevalence, prevention strategies, caregiver support programs, health clinics’ ability to provide antiretroviral treatment, and testing of the organization’s first-generation candidate microbicide, Carraguard™, a gel designed to reduce the transmission of HIV when used during sex.
