Orphans, Abstinence, and Microbicides
At South African AIDS Conference, Population Council Presents Research Findings Reflecting Its Comprehensive Approach to HIV and AIDS Prevention, Support, and Treatment

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA and NEW YORK, NY (18 May 2007)—Population Council HIV and AIDS researchers will join experts from around the world at the 3rd South African AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, 5–8 June 2007. Council staff will share findings from studies aimed at understanding the individual, social, and economic circumstances that influence whether people engage in safe sex, learn their HIV status, and seek care. Recent Population Council research in South Africa includes assessments of HIV prevalence, prevention strategies, caregiver support programs, health clinics’ ability to provide antiretroviral treatment, and testing of the organization’s first-generation candidate microbicide, Carraguard™, a gel designed to reduce the transmission of HIV when used during sex. Sessions of special note include presentations about:

  • Training youth caregivers to address the needs of orphans and vulnerable children through an in-school care and support program in KwaZulu-Natal (more);
  • Developing an abstinence and faithfulness component to supplement an existing HIV and AIDS education curriculum (more);
  • Challenges to integrating antiretroviral treatment and tuberculosis treatment in health facilities in South Africa (more);
  • Male partner circumcision and its relation to HIV prevalence among women volunteers in the Phase 3 Carraguard microbicide trial (more); and
  • Partnering with faith-based organizations and church leaders to promote mutual monogamy in the Eastern Cape Province (more)
