Population Council's Sheldon J. Segal
Receives the NEW YORK (24 September 2008) — Population Council Distinguished Scientist Sheldon J. Segal was awarded the Society of Family Planning's Lifetime Achievement Award at the society's 2008 awards dinner on 19 September in Washington, DC. "Dr. Segal's tremendous achievements and contributions to the field of family planning truly embody the spirit of this award and the quality of work that we strive to support and promote within our membership," said society president Mitchell D. Creinin, M.D. This award recognizes outstanding individuals whose cumulative research has reached the highest level of importance in the field. Recipients of this award have devoted their scientific and medical careers to the furtherance of women’s reproductive choice and health. Segal is Distinguished Scientist at the Population Council and chairman of the Council's Institutional Review Board. He is the former director for Population Sciences at the Rockefeller Foundation and continues his association with the Foundation as the Ella Walker Distinguished Scholar, Bellagio Study Center. He is an adjunct professor of clinical pharmacology at Cornell Medical School. The Population Council is an international, nonprofit, nongovernmental research organization that seeks to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world and to help achieve a humane, equitable, and sustainable balance between people and resources. The Council conducts biomedical, social science, and public health research and helps build research capacities in developing countries. Established in 1952, the Council is governed by an international board of trustees.
