MEDIA CENTER USAID Programs Assist the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund Washington, DC (10 January 2003) — The Population Council, its research partners, and the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund will be working together to improve the health, safety, and survival rates of South Africa's orphans and other vulnerable children. Two Population Council programs, Horizons and Frontiers in Reproductive Health, will team with Development Research Africa to provide research assistance to the fund's Goelama Project. The project is a five-year effort to address the socioeconomic needs of vulnerable children. Researchers will monitor and evaluate Goelama's impact and help the group define its future research priorities. Funding is provided by the US Agency for International Development. Frontiers in Reproductive Health conducts research to improve the delivery of family planning and reproductive health services in developing countries. Horizons is dedicated to improving HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support programs and policies around the world. The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, which helps community organizations implement projects, focuses on strengthening households, creating community support systems, promoting behaviors that prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (especially among orphans), and works to expand and integrate local government response to South African children. For additional information about this work, please contact Dr. Eka Esu-Williams in the Population Council's South Africa office (ewilliams@pcjoburg.org,za).
