MEDIA CENTER New Directors Named at Population Council NEW YORK (11 October 2001) — The Population Council has named two new directors: Melissa May as director of public information and Ruth Kalla Ungerer as director of development. May has a background in corporate communications, while Ungerer is the former vice president for development for the New School University in New York City. "These two positions are crucial to communicating the Council's work to influential members of the public, and we are delighted to be joined by such well-qualified, experienced professionals," remarked Council president Linda G. Martin. "Melissa May and Ruth Ungerer will help expand our audiences and increase awareness of our work, which includes demographic, biomedical, and public health research." Melissa May, APR Melissa May has more than 14 years' experience in the telecommunications, high-tech, and transportation industries and is active in several professional, community, and academic organizations. Her previous work experience includes two years with Digevent (a web event management firm) as director of marketing, six years with AirTouch Cellular as manager of public relations and promotions, and five years with Airborne Express as public relations manager. May has undergraduate and graduate degrees in public relations and marketing from Purdue University and the University of Texas. She has extensive experience with public affairs, event planning, media relations, community outreach, and sponsorship activities. She is former president of the Orange County, California chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and co-chaired the host committee for that organization's 1999 international conference. She received the chapter's Distinguished Service Award and several Protos and Totem awards. May is accredited in public relations (APR). May is a former member of the Marketing Communications Advisory Board for the University of California, Irvine's Extension program and the Chapman University Public Relations Advisory Committee. She has taught public relations at the University of Phoenix and regularly speaks on marketing, communications, and public relations issues and web event management. Ruth Kalla Ungerer Ruth Kalla Ungerer, a development officer with over 20 years' experience, has been hired as the Population Council's director of development and will be responsible for expanding fundraising and donor relation activities. Immediately prior to joining the Council, she served as vice president for development for the New School University in New York City. Ungerer joined the New School in 1996 as the campaign director for two of the university's seven divisions, adding increasing responsibility during her tenure. As vice president, she worked with the university's president and trustees to help complete the university's $200 million capital campaign. Preceding her work with the New School, Ungerer directed "Private Initiatives for a Global Future: The Campaign for Montclair State University." The campaign, the university's first major effort, had an initial $8 million goal that ultimately reached $10 million. As director of development and public relations for Literacy Volunteers of New York City (now Literacy Partners), she secured support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and city and state sources and coordinated the organization's "Evening of Authors' Readings." Ungerer began her fundraising career at the Committee for Economic Development (CED), a nonprofit, nonpartisan research and educational organization of 250 top corporate and university leaders that addresses economic and social issues affecting our society. She served ten years with CED, following a one-year stint as director of the 1980 Decennial Census operations for 94 municipalities in the northern New Jersey counties of Morris, Northern Passaic, Sussex, and Warren. Ungerer holds a BFA magna cum laude from Drew University and was an active volunteer in the municipal government of the Township of Randolph prior to moving to her current home in Maplewood, New Jersey.
