MEDIA CENTER Population Council, India Announces a Set of Three Briefs NEW DELHI (2 July 2004) — A set of three briefs consolidate the main themes addressed at a global consultative meeting on non-consensual sex among young people in developing countries held in New Delhi in September 2003. The meeting was organised by the Population Council, India in collaboration with World Health Organisation/ Department of Reproductive Health and Research, Switzerland, and Family Health International/YouthNet, USA. Participants included researchers, legal analysts, representatives from community-based NGOs, policy makers, and young people themselves. The titles for the briefs are as follows. Please click on the titles to access the documents.
In addition, FHI/YouthNet has produced a brief from the same meeting, titled "Non-consensual sex among youth" as a YouthLens Brief no. 10. Click on the following URL to access the same: http://www.fhi.org/en/Youth/YouthNet/Publications/YouthLens+English.htm There was a consensus among participants that the meeting made a valuable contribution to a poorly researched and poorly served area of sexual and reproductive health. It was the first attempt to shed light on non-consensual sexual experiences of young females and males aged 24 or less and threw light on a disturbing situation with significant public health implications that have thus far been neglected.
