This Micralax applicator delivers a single dose of Carraguard® microbicide gel. The term "microbicide" refers to a range of products, in cream, gel, film, or suppository form, that would substantially reduce the transmission of HIV—and possibly other sexually transmitted infections—when applied prior to sex.

Women in South Africa and Thailand, who participated in a Phase 2 expanded safety study of Carraguard, reported that the Micralax applicator was easy to use.
