This
Micralax
applicator delivers a single dose of Carraguard®
microbicide
gel. The term "microbicide" refers to a
range of products, in cream, gel, film, or suppository form, that
would substantially reduce the transmission of HIV—and possibly
other sexually transmitted infections—when applied prior to sex.

Women in South Africa and Thailand, who
participated in a Phase 2 expanded safety
study of Carraguard, reported that the Micralax
applicator was easy to use. |

The
levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (IUS) Mirena®
combines the best features of hormonal contraceptives and IUDs. It
is extremely effective and has the added benefit of reducing the
excessive menstrual bleeding experienced by some women.
