Policy Education
Population Council staff members have played a pivotal role for the past decade in articulating
the need for a vaginal microbicide among policymakers, funding agencies,
scientists, researchers, and activists in a variety of settings. This
effort has been particularly important given that, until recently,
microbicides have been low on the agenda of most international donors
and
nongovernmental and governmental agencies. Council researchers have
worked closely with other colleagues to ensure that discussion of
microbicides is featured prominently at key professional meetings and in
international forums.
Population
Council staff members worked closely with International Family Health, a
London-based nongovernmental organization, on a program of policy
education to increase awareness of microbicides among advocates, funding
agencies, and policymakers in Europe. As part of this effort, the Council and
International Family Health co-produced
The Case for Microbicides: A Global
Priority, a synthesis of progress and challenges in the field. Thousands of
copies of this booklet have been distributed to a wide range of audiences
worldwide.
Council staff members actively participate in a number of coalitions and
efforts to coordinate and advance the field. The Council microbicides team
has had representatives involved with the International Working Group on
Microbicides—which includes scientific organizations from around the world
active in the field of microbicide development—since
its inception. Members of the team share ideas and develop scientific
guidelines in key areas such as preclinical and clinical testing. They also
regularly attend the Microbicides Media &
Communications Initiative and Global Campaign for Microbicides, and they participate in the Alliance for
Microbicide Development, a group of investigators, organizations, and
companies working to develop microbicides. The Alliance works on a range of
issues of interest to the field, such as increasing funding and clarifying
regulatory requirements.
