To mark UN International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Norwegian news outlets Bistandsaktuelt and Nettavisen published new data highlighting Population Council research on Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting (FGM/C).
FGM/C project director Jacinta Muteshi argues that a majority of men in countries where FGM/C is prevalent are against the practice. It is important to bring men into the conversation and take into account the cultural landscape in order to develop effective programs to end FGM/C.
“We have long tried to fight this cruel tradition without having a clear picture of what reality is, without knowing with certainty which measures work and do not work. We now see that many men are opposed, while women say "we do it for our men" and we must take this information into account.”
