JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the director of corporate affairs, the development manager is responsible for planning, implementing, executing, and evaluating a range of fundraising initiatives to increase the level of unrestricted support from individuals and family foundations. This position is responsible for maintaining donor relationships with a targeted approach to current contributors in support of the Annual Fund. The incumbent must report regularly on the progress made in securing general support, endowment, and project-specific grants from individuals and private foundations. The development manager is responsible for organizing donor cultivation events and assisting with special projects as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Expand the Council’s ability to increase funding by developing and implementing fundraising initiatives in such areas as: unrestricted and loosely restricted support from individuals and family foundations, annual giving from family trusts and smaller private foundations, and the enhancement of fundraising outreach efforts to individuals and foundations involving Council board members, president, and senior staff members.
  2. Maintain the fundraising participation from the Council’s current donor base, while simultaneously increasing incoming funding by networking with established donors and cultivating long-standing relationships such as those with charitable giving rating organizations.
  3. Assist in the design, development, and implementation of such Council “marketing” efforts as special events and presentations, cultivation dinners, symposia, receptions; as well as associated fundraising material such as newsletters and brochures.
  4. Maintain an accurate donor and funding database, thereby producing a complete and comprehensive data profile of fundraising history involving activity, outreach, prospects, growth, rejections, and so forth.
  5. Assist in ensuring a timely and comprehensive response to major proposals to federal government agencies in accordance with proposal stipulations, by providing needed development expertise, advice, and staffing as requested.
  6. Manage and lead a staff of motivated development professionals.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree preferably in communication, journalism, marketing, or a related field; and at least 7–10 years of successful experience in fundraising from individuals and family foundations.
  2. Demonstrated skills in designing and implementing effective fundraising strategies.
  3. Excellent oral communication, written communication, and presentation skills; with the ability to translate technical work for lay audiences in a manner that generates enthusiasm.
  4. Preferred knowledge of developing countries and/or programmatic activity in the areas of HIV and AIDS; poverty, gender, and youth; and reproductive health.
  5. Must be willing to apply any and all development-related skills to various Council projects on an as-needed basis.
  6. Preferred familiarity with computer software fundraising applications.
  7. Master's degree in communication, journalism, marketing, or a related field is desirable.

The Population Council’s budget for 2008 is approximately $79.7 million with about 50 percent expected to come from US government sources, 8 percent from foreign governments and multilateral organizations, 25 percent from major foundations and nongovernmental organizations, 6 percent from product royalties, and 6 percent from the Council’s endowments of roughly $90 million. Gifts from individuals and family foundations represent another 5 percent of the annual budget.
