EMPLOYMENT POSITION AVAILABLE TITLE: Director of Development, Corporate Affairs Division REPORTING TO: Director, Corporate Affairs SALARY: Depends on qualifications and experience LOCATION: One Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, New York, NY ASSIGNMENT LENGTH: Indefinite ABOUT THE POPULATION COUNCIL The mission of the Population Council is to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world. The Population Council conducts research worldwide to improve policies, programs, and products in three program areas: HIV and AIDS; poverty, gender, and youth; and reproductive health. Its staff of more than 520 is located in 18 offices in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as an office in Washington, DC, and its laboratories and headquarters in New York City. The Population Council’s budget for 2008 is approximately $80 million with about 50 percent expected to come from US government sources, 8 percent from foreign governments and multilateral organizations, 25 percent from major foundations and nongovernmental organizations, 6 percent from product royalties, and 6 percent from the Council’s endowment. Gifts from individuals and family foundations represent another 5 percent of the annual budget. More information about the Council can be found at www.popcouncil.org. JOB DESCRIPTION The primary responsibility of the director of development is to design and manage effective fundraising strategies to increase contributions, grants, and awards from the public and private sectors, including foundations, corporations, individuals, US and foreign governments, and multilateral agencies. The director will oversee prospect research, contributions to the endowments, annual and planned giving campaigns, Internet-based initiatives, event planning, and new business development specifically targeting projects within the Council’s three program areas: HIV and AIDS; poverty, gender, and youth; and reproductive health. The director will build and lead the Council’s Development Unit and take chief responsibility for development-related foreign government interactions. The director will oversee all functions of the Development Unit staff responsible for specific fundraising areas, such as new business development, proposal writing and coordination, annual giving, and the like. The director will also work collaboratively with program and country directors to develop fundraising strategies, goals, and plans. RESPONSIBILITIES
