ASSIGNMENT LENGTH: Two years, renewable by mutual consent and availability of funds

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Population Council’s HIV and AIDS program seeks a senior research investigator chemist with experience in cGMP (current good manufacturing practices) for Phase 1 investigational drugs as microbicides to join a multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians working on methods to prevent the transmission of HIV.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Oversee operation of a cGMP facility that produces microbicide gels and rings for Phase 1 clinical trials.
2. Develop scalable processes for microbicide formulations to be used in Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials and facilitate the transfer of processes to outside vendors.
3. Edit and/or write standard operating procedures (SOPs).
4. Contribute to regulatory documents and filings.
5. Supervise and mentor junior-level laboratory staff.
6. Handle antiretroviral compounds and common laboratory chemicals.
7. Maintain a safe work environment under cGMP conditions.
8. Present work at internal meetings and national/international scientific meetings.
9. Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
10. Collaborate with colleagues to secure research support from outside agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Ph.D. or M.D. in chemistry or closely related field with a minimum of three years' relevant experience, including experience in a cGMP facility.
2. Experience dealing with regulatory agencies for product development.
3. Experience in grant writing a plus.
4. Demonstrated ability to work in a team as well as independently.
