POSITION AVAILABLE

TITLE: Legal Intern (Part-Time), Office of the General Counsel and Secretary

REPORTING TO: General Counsel and Secretary

SALARY: $15.00 per hour, plus academic credit if applicable

HOURS: Flexible, approximately 15–20 hour per week

LOCATION:  One Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, New York, NY

ASSIGNMENT LENGTH: Approximately three months (one semester), with possibility of extension based on mutual consent and availability of funding

JOB DESCRIPTION

The legal intern will be under the direct mentorship of the organization’s general counsel and will be required to assist the general counsel by conducting research on legal issues affecting international nonprofit research organizations, drafting legal memoranda, assisting in the administration of agreements, monitoring and reporting on proposed and enacted legislation relevant to the organization, and providing assistance on litigation matters.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda on a variety of topics including laws governing intellectual property rights, the conduct of human subject research, government funding of research, tax issues affecting nonprofit organizations, domestic and international employment issues, and corporate governance issues.
  2. Monitor and prepare reports on legislation pertinent to the Council’s overall operations.
  3. Assist with litigation matters including preparation of materials for discovery.
  4. Assist with the preparation of filings to establish overseas offices.
  5. Assist with the preparation of organizational policies.
  6. Assist at meetings by preparing meeting agenda, compiling necessary background documents, taking minutes.
  7. Prepare agreement summaries.
  8. Provide general assistance to the general counsel as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Current enrollment in law school required and completion of first year minimum; second- or third-year law students preferred.
  2. Experience and/or knowledge and ability to use fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of the legal field.
  3. Research and writing skills, and the ability to communicate complex legal points in a precise manner. Candidate must express an interest in applying his/her skills in a not-for-profit, international environment.
