Prevention of HIV Transmission Within Marriage in India: Review of the Research

Monogamous wives make up 50 percent of new HIV infections in India; the Council is working to improve the lives of these married women through evidence-based HIV prevention programs.

The Population Council is collaborating with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in India to address the HIV prevention needs of women whose husbands are involved in transactional sex. The goal of this project is to improve the lives of married women through evidence-based HIV prevention programs.

As part of this effort, the Population Council in partnership with UNAIDS is undertaking a systematic review of the existing literature on transmission of HIV among steady sexual partners in India to trace the progress of research and programs. Findings of this review will be used to develop programs and policies on prevention of HIV transmission within marriage in India.
