Enhancing Utilization of the Findings from the Youth Reproductive Health Project

The Council provided technical assistance to Senegal’s MOH to implement programs to improve adolescent reproductive health.

FRONTIERS provided technical assistance to help Senegal's Ministry of Health (MOH) and Ministry of Youth develop the capacity to plan programs for adolescents based on lessons learned during the experimental phases of a project designed to improve young people's reproductive health.

Following the initial study, adolescent health was established as a reproductive health priority in Senegal, as it was thought to have the most sustainable impact on overarching goals to increase contraceptive prevalence and reduce maternal mortality in Senegal.

Training tools used in the pilot project were revised and adopted as national documents by the MOH. In September 2006, the MOH in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the Population Council held a conference to release a new policy document that serves as a guide for program leaders implementing activities at the national and local levels. In 2007, FRONTIERS provided technical assistance to the MOH to further its plan of action at the central and regional levels, which was submitted to the Division of STI/HIV/AIDS (MOH) for funding by the World Bank.

The Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Sport, and the Ministry of Youth integrated the adolescent reproductive health (ARH) model into various programs such as school-based interventions, "Espaces Jeunes," the master's degree program in sports education, and a training curriculum for peer educators.

FRONTIERS collaborated with the MOH in creating "technical forms" to further assist planning of ARH activities at the district level throughout Senegal and promoted the Senegal model to establish cooperation among CAs, NGOs, and international agencies in order to successfully scale up the program in Senegal and replicate it in francophone West African countries.
