Survey of Young People in Egypt

Council researchers conducted a nationally representative survey covering 15,000 young people in Egypt aged 10–29 to update the state of knowledge on youth and adolescents in Egypt on issues of health, education, employment, family formation, and civic participation.

Egypt is at a stage in its demographic transition with a marked "youth bulge," a period in which the proportion of youth in the population increases significantly compared to other age groups. In the coming decade, Egypt will have the largest demographic cohort ever making its way to adulthood. Young people are important catalysts for development and change. Investment in this crucial age group provides an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate growth and reduce poverty. Success or failure in policies in the areas of education, employment, or health will have a decisive impact on this cohort of young people. Owing to the dearth of data on youth, the Population Council has recently conducted a comprehensive situation analysis of adolescents and youth in Egypt: The Survey of Young People in Egypt (SYPE).

Recently fielded on a nationally representative sample of 15,000 young people aged 10–29 years, the survey collected data on the five key areas of education, work, family formation, health and sexuality, and civic and political participation. Council researchers currently are participating in writing Egypt’s Human Development Report, this year focusing on youth, building on the data of the survey. A report on the results of the survey has just been released.
