Progesterone Ring for Lactating Women

Council researchers developed a vaginal ring for lactating women that extends the contraceptive effectiveness of lactation.

The vaginal ring is a drug-delivery system that can be inserted easily into the vagina by the woman herself. It slowly releases natural progesterone that is absorbed into the bloodstream. About 2¼" in diameter and the size of the outer rim of a diaphragm, this soft contraceptive ring is an easy-to-use, reversible method that may have advantages over other methods for women who are breastfeeding.

This ring uses the natural hormone progesterone. While not an effective contraceptive method for women who are not breastfeeding, it can be used by nursing women to extend the contraceptive effectiveness of lactation. The Council developed and has carried out extensive studies with the progesterone ring in more than 1,000 lactating women in eight countries. The method was well accepted and effectively protected women from pregnancy.

Following the registration of the progesterone vaginal ring (Progering®) in several countries in Latin America by Laboratorios Andromaco of Santiago, Chile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has agreed to work with the Population Council and HLL Lifecare Limited to evaluate the progesterone ring’s efficacy, safety, and acceptability in enhancing the contraceptive options for breastfeeding women in diverse cultural contexts of India. With support from the Indo-US Science and Technology Cooperation Program, the Council and ICMR are preparing to conduct a large-scale clinical trial in 20 sites. The long-term goal is to make available in India a new safe and effective contraceptive method for lactating women. This study may also facilitate the transfer of technology for ring production to a qualified manufacturer of pharmaceutical products in India.
