PROJECT
Preventive Care Package for People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA)

Ethiopia has a population of roughly 77 million people; it is estimated that 2.1 percent of this large population are HIV-positive. With support from USAID/PEPFAR, the Preventive Care Package for People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) is a three-year partnership between Population Services International (PSI), the Population Council, and IntraHealth International. The partners are developing a new home-based care package for PLWHA. The package contains products to assist in preventing opportunistic infections, including disinfectants, soap, water purifiers, and insecticide-treated bed nets. The kit will be distributed through clinical settings as well as through associations for people living with HIV and AIDS.

The Population Council is leading monitoring and evaluation efforts for the initiative. The Council’s Ethiopia office is undertaking longitudinal surveys of PLWHA to evaluate changes associated with provision of the kit, including long-term uptake of hygienic and prevention practices.
