Guillermo Villegas

Guillermo Villegas is a senior research investigator at the Council’s Center for Biomedical Research, where he studies the efficacy and mechanisms of action of microbicide gels and intravaginal rings in preventing HIV infection.

Before joining the Council in 2012, Villegas was an associate in the Department of Biochemistry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he developed cell-cloning strategies using HIV retrotranscriptase and integrase. As a researcher at the Animal Virus Research Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he developed an innovative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to distinguish animals infected with foot-and-mouth disease virus from uninfected or vaccinated animals.

Villegas has a master’s of science in biology from Universidad Nacional de La Plata in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
