In 2005 the Population Council undertook a comprehensive review of how it could best address the population, health, and development challenges facing the world. After analyzing its strengths and weaknesses, assessing its expertise, and setting strategic directions for its work, the Council's trustees and staff targeted three areas that are crucial for the future of developing countries:

During 2006 the organization began to restructure its research and programs to align with these new themes. As of the end of the year, two program directors have been hired: Wendy Baldwin has assumed the leadership of the Poverty, Gender, and Youth program (more); and John W. Townsend was named the head of the Reproductive Health program (more). In February 2007 Naomi Rutenberg was named director of the HIV and AIDS program (more).

In the months to come, the Council's Web site will be reorganized to reflect these new thematic areas of research and programs. Some sections of the site will be absorbed into the new framework, while others may be removed. If you cannot locate a piece of information you seek, please make use of the site's search engine or contact the Office of Public Information.

Thank you for your interest in the Population Council.
