Scott Kellerman, M.D., M.P.H.
The HIV and AIDS program is recruiting a Bixby fellow to assist in a broad
portfolio of projects currently underway or soon to begin. Based in New
York, the fellow will be directly mentored by Scott Kellerman, M.D., M.P.H.,
senior associate with the HIV and AIDS program. While Kellerman has
extensive background in operations research and program implementation, the
fellow also will enjoy a team approach to supervision and mentoring,
incorporating a cross-section of Council staff with a variety of expertise.
Current projects include a roster of behavioral science interventions and
evaluation, as well as development of second- and third-generation
microbicides.
Potential exists for fellow participation in:
- Continued evaluation of the Council-developed microbicide gel
Carraguard®, which, if proven effective, would offer women a powerful
prevention tool against HIV transmission;
- Evaluation of and possible contribution to clinical trials of
"next-generation" formulations, combining Carraguard with other
compounds such as antiretroviral drugs;
- Study and management of behavioral factors that may inhibit the use
of microbicides or somehow diminish adherence to microbicides;
- Operations research examining participation and adherence in
clinical trials;
- Operations research focusing on male circumcision, that is,
determining the best and most effective strategies to introduce
circumcision programs in sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere;
- Addressing the best approaches to scaling up voluntary counseling
and testing for both adults and children;
- Economic studies of HIV prevention, treatment, and care to determine
not only those programs that are successful, but also those that are
most cost-effective; and
- Interventions that focus on young girls’ ability to avoid HIV
infection.
