STRENGTHENING PROFESSIONAL RESOURCES Well-qualified professionals are needed throughout the world to address population and development issues. Strengthening this professional base is an integral part of the Population Council's mission. When the Population Council awarded its first fellowships for advanced training in demography, there were few professionals in the field, and most people were far from persuaded that population issues existed, much less that there was a need for policy action. When world attention focused on population growth in the 1960s and 1970s, population specialists were deployed around the world, thanks, in part, to the Council. By 1974 an outside evaluator of the Council’s social science fellowship program observed, “The roster of fellows reads like a who’s who in population.” The reproductive physiology postdoctoral program has been similarly fruitful. Altogether, more than 2,400 social and biomedical scientists have received fellowship support from these and other Council programs. The work of these fellows has enhanced the Population Council's key role in shaping population policy and programs fostering research in the reproductive sciences. Population Council fellowships are supported by private foundations, the US government, individuals, and the Council itself. To contribute to the Population Council, click here.
