Anrudh K. Jain, Ph.D.
Distinguished Scholar
Population Council Distinguished Scholar Anrudh K. Jain was vice president of International Programs and before that senior director of Policy and Regional Programs in the Council's International Programs Division. He has had a leadership role in the management of international programs at the Council for over 20 years. He has been playing a leadership role in shaping the research and program agendas in international population and reproductive health and working actively to bridge the gap between demographic and reproductive health perspectives in population policies and programs.
In addition to his management and leadership responsibilities, Jain is directing an international program of field studies that is generating empirical evidence on the feasibility of improving quality of care and the effect of care received by women on their subsequent reproductive health and behavior.
Jain joined the Population Council in 1971 as staff associate based in Delhi, moved to the Center for Biomedical Research in New York in 1973, and shifted to the International Programs Division in 1976. Prior to joining the Council, he worked with the Ford Foundation in Delhi and the University of Michigan where he also received his Ph.D. in sociology in 1968.
Jain has collaborated as a founding member in setting up the African Population and Health Research Center in Nairobi and served on its board of directors until 2005. He has made numerous presentations at international meetings and other professional gatherings. He has edited, authored, or co-authored five books and approximately 70 research papers on topics related to population policy, fertility, reproductive health and family planning, infant mortality, safety and effectiveness of contraceptives, marketing of contraceptives, and management of pregnancies.
