Barbara Friedland, M.P.H.
Associate
Barbara Friedland, an associate in the Population Council's HIV and AIDS program, has been integrally involved in the Council’s microbicides program since 1996, conducting both clinical and behavioral research. She was the study coordinator for several clinical trials of Carraguard®, the Council’s candidate microbicide, and directed the behavioral aspects of the Council’s Phase 3 efficacy trial of Carraguard. In this role, she was responsible for the development of informed consent and educational materials, including a 20-minute educational video produced in four languages for the three South African study sites. (She talks about the process in a short video.) Most recently, she produced a video entitled Hope Against HIV: Microbicides Trials in Your Community for use educating communities in Africa about microbicide clinical trials.
Friedland's portfolio includes quantitative and qualitative research on ethical issues in HIV prevention research, informed consent for male circumcision service delivery, and behavioral studies around microbicides acceptability and adherence. Prior to joining the Council, she was orchestra manager for the New York City–based Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and business affairs and public relations manager at Open City Films.
Friedland received her master's in public health in community health education from Hunter College of the City University of New York. A graduate of Douglass College, Rutgers University, she holds a master's of music in piano performance from the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. She has also produced several films, including a documentary entitled From Coercion to Choice: The Hysterectomy Epidemic in America.
