Charlotte Warren
Associate
Charlotte Warren is based in Washington, DC, and is one of the Population Council’s lead social scientists with extensive experience in research, policy, and program development in maternal and neonatal health, reproductive health, family planning, and primary health care. She is a nurse by training with expertise in pediatrics.
Warren has worked in ten African countries building the skills of policymakers and program managers to address critical public health issues. She was a key contributor to the development of the African Road Map for Accelerating the Reduction of Maternal and Newborn Mortality, and has supported Swaziland, Lesotho, and Kenya in developing country-specific plans. She co-developed the community midwifery approach in Kenya as an additional strategy to increase skilled attendance at birth.
Warren’s other key areas of research in the sub-Saharan Africa region include developing a comprehensive package of postnatal care, assessing the benefits of integrated HIV and sexual and reproductive health services, evaluating voucher and accreditation interventions for reproductive health, and the issue of disrespect and abuse of women that takes place during childbirth in health care facilities in Kenya.
