Chi-Chi Undie

Associate

Chi-Chi Undie was formerly a Ford Foundation postdoctoral fellow in sexuality at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) and, later, an associate research scientist at the same institution where she led the sexuality program for three years. The author of a key publication entitled "The state of knowledge on sexuality in sub-Saharan Africa: A synthesis of literature," and a Ford Foundation grantee from 2006 to 2009, she has either spearheaded or been deeply involved in several seminal research and communications initiatives geared toward opening up the field of sexuality in the East African region.

Undie joined the Population Council in 2009 and works primarily under an operations research project in Kenya that supports USAID’s AIDS, Population and Health Integrated Assistance program (APHIA II) in finding innovative ways to improve service delivery through research. Her responsibilities span two thematic areas of the APHIA II operations research project in Kenya, namely, "Meeting the Needs of Adolescents" and "Gender and HIV." She is also principal investigator for the evaluation component of a postabortion care intervention being conducted in Kenya under the USAID-sponsored RESPOND project.

Prior to joining the Population Council, Undie served as principal investigator for a wide range of sexual and reproductive health research projects at APHRC. A graduate of the University of Calabar, Nigeria, she holds an interdisciplinary doctoral degree in language, literacy, and culture from the University of Maryland and a master's in intercultural communication from the same institution. Her publications center primarily on sexuality in sub-Saharan Africa and have appeared in international journals.

Evaluation of the Replication of the Community Postabortion Care (COMMPAC) Model in Kenya (more)
The Council engaged in a replication of the COMMPAC model in Kenya's Rift Valley Province to increase access to postabortion care services by enhancing knowledge of sources of care and reducing fear of stigma, dissatisfaction with provider attitudes and performance, cost of services, and other barriers to care.
