Dolores D. Mruk, Ph.D.

Dolores D. Mruk is a staff scientist at Population Council’s Center for Biomedical Research. She obtained her Ph.D in cell and molecular biology from The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong and received postdoctoral training at Population Council under the mentorship of Dr. C. Yan Cheng. Her research has been recognized in the past through numerous awards from The Endocrine Society and American Society of Andrology.

Mruk’s research investigates adhesive interactions between Sertoli and germ cells in the testis, and how these interactions contribute to the maintenance of spermatogenesis and fertility in the male. To achieve this goal, she is currently studying the biology of the desmosome-like junctions in the testis, as well as their regulation by GTPases. Understanding how Sertoli-germ cell adhesion can be disrupted transiently by blocking the function of desmosomes and GTPases offers an interesting approach to the development of male contraceptives in the future.

She is also interested in studying the role played by drug transporters in the entry of contraceptive agents into the seminiferous epithelium beyond the blood-testis barrier. Understanding how tight junctions at the blood-testis barrier can be opened transiently by perturbing the function of drug transporters can provide novel insights into drug delivery.
