Associate
Erica Soler-Hampejsek an associate with the Poverty, Gender, and Youth program, began her work with the Council as a Fred H. Bixby Fellow beginning in 2008. She has participated in collection and analysis of longitudinal data in Guatemala and Malawi, with a focus on schooling and marriage. In Malawi she coordinated data collection for a study on marriage transitions carried out by the World Bank and for Rounds 2–4 of the Malawi Schooling and Adolescent Survey.
Soler-Hampejsek is studying how schooling experience relates to the timing of sexual initiation, marriage, and childbearing, as well as the differences observed in the transition through schooling by gender and ethnicity. She is expanding her research on gender differences in the schooling experience to differences between indigenous and nonindigenous populations in Latin America, focusing on the effects of availability of bilingual education (Spanish and indigenous) in Mexico.
Her doctoral dissertation at the University of Pennsylvania focused on the effect of schooling on the transition to marriage in Guatemala.
