Ian Askew, Ph.D.

Director, Reproductive Health Services and Research

Ian Askew is the director of Reproductive Health Services and Research within the Population Council's Reproductive Health program. In this role, Askew leads and coordinates the Council's research and technical assistance activities to strengthen reproductive and maternal health services in all of its country offices. Currently based in the Council's office in Nairobi, Kenya, Askew has more than three decades of experience in reproductive and maternal health research in developing countries, and for the past 20 years has lived and worked throughout sub-Saharan Africa. In his current role, he provides technical support to Council activities in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Askew's professional interests include: health systems strengthening and research; innovative health financing mechanisms; integrating reproductive health with other health services; improving community-based health services; responding to the consequences of sexual and gender-based violence; and eliminating female genital mutilation/cutting. Askew has published widely and is frequently invited to give presentations at conferences and workshops around the world.
