Mark R. Montgomery, Ph.D.
Senior Associate
Mark R. Montgomery is a senior associate with the Population Council's Poverty, Gender, and Youth program. He also is a professor in the economics department at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His current research interests lie in three areas: the links between poverty and demographic behavior in the cities of developing countries; measurement of poverty and poverty dynamics using proxy variables; and how diffusion dynamics operate in the spread of fertility control and other innovative forms of demographic behavior.
Montgomery joined the Population Council in 1993. Before that, he had been in the Office of Population Research, Princeton University, and was a Rockefeller Foundation senior fellow at the University of Lagos. He holds a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (1982). He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Population and served from 1999 to 2003 as co-chair of its Panel on Urban Population Dynamics. The panel’s report, entitled Cities Transformed: Demographic Change and Its Implications in the Developing World, was published by the National Academy Press in 2003; he was editor of the report along with Richard Stren, Barney Cohen, and Holly Reed.

Malawi Schooling and Adolescent Study (more)
This six-round longitudinal study aims to identify critical aspects of school quality that put adolescents who face the dual challenges of poverty and HIV/AIDS on a safer, healthier, and more productive path to adulthood. Our research seeks to uncover those aspects of schooling that will lead to more protective behaviors and lower HIV risk among young men and women.
(1/2007 - 4/2015)
Topics: Adolescence/transitions to adulthood; Child marriage; HIV and children; HIV prevention; RTIs/STIs; Schooling; Sexual and gender-based violence; Sexuality and sexual behavior; Sexuality education
Countries: Malawi
Girls on the Move: A Girls Count Report on Adolescent Girls' Migration (more)
The Population Council is developing a report for the Girls Count series that will synthesize and build the evidence base on migrating adolescent girls ages 10–19 and will provide promising program examples and action-oriented recommendations to a variety of international stakeholders.
(3/2011 - 8/2012)
Topics: Adolescence/transitions to adulthood; Social isolation/support; Urbanization, health, and the environment; Vulnerable populations
Countries: Global
Critical Communities for Investment in Adolescent Girls (more)
This project will provide data and maps on vulnerable adolescent girls and build support among donors and interested stakeholders to make investments that improve the health and rights of the poorest girls in the poorest communities.
(1/2009 - 4/2011)
Topics: Adolescence/transitions to adulthood; Population policy and demographic analysis; Social isolation/support
Countries: Global
Demographic Data for Development (more)
The first phase of the Demographic Data for Development project consisted of case studies in Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, and Uganda to examine accessibility, use, and demand for demographic data. In the second phase of the project, the Council and its partners are working to increase data access and use among journalists and members of the media in Ghana, Senegal, and Namibia.
(8/2008 - 7/2011)
Topics: Population policy and demographic analysis
Countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Namibia, Senegal, Uganda
