Nahla Abdel-Tawab, Dr.P.H.
Senior Associate & Country Director
Nahla Abdel-Tawab is an associate with the Poverty, Gender, and Youth program and the country director of the Population Council's office in Egypt. She first joined the Council in 1995 as an operations research country fellow, then became a host country advisor in 1998. She left the Council in 2000 to work as an independent consultant and behavior change communication specialist for the Catalyst Project.
Abdel-Tawab rejoined the Council as an associate in the Egypt office in December 2003, and before she assumed the position as the country director, she was the head of the regional reproductive health program for the WANA region. She works closely with ministries of health and leading NGOs to identify research priorities and interventions that address pressing needs and issues in reproductive health. She provides technical and managerial leadership for the design and implementation of interventions to improve the quality of reproductive health services. She also plays a key role in facilitating the scale-up of interventions as well as the utilization of research results by policymakers and program managers.
Abdel-Tawab holds a medical degree from Cairo University and a doctorate of public health from Johns Hopkins University. Her areas of expertise include operations research, reproductive health services, postpartum and postabortion care, female genital mutilation/cutting, capacity building, research utilization, and scaling up of interventions.
